There are more Asian elephants in this magnificent national park than in any other park in Sri Lanka. Large herds of these gentle animals can be seen by visitors as they explore the different biomes.
Yala preserves the oldest national park of Sri Lanka. The park contains many leopards residing within its boundaries. Leopards aside, many other wild species exist in this park including elephants and deer together with buffaloes followed by crocodiles.
Bundala National Park has obtained UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status which made it famous worldwide. This location serves as an important habitat that hosts an extensive variety of migratory birds as well native species. Several different species of wildlife reside in this park because it holds crocodiles together with elephants and leopards and wild boars.
Wildlife at Wilpattu includes various species such as deer, birds. crocodiles and elephants. The animals residing at this location depend on ‘Willu’ which stands for precipitation-filled land depressions. Animals in this area depend on these vital water resources.
Due to the endangered sloth bears’ presence, Wasgamuwa got its name. In addition to its large elephant population, it is recognized as an important Bird Area in Sri Lanka.
Numerous elephants live within Minneriya National Park. The best time to watch their herds appear is during the dry season between November to April. Many elephants assemble at the Minneriya Tank during this time to create the spectacle of ‘The Gathering’.
During the migration season, a large number of birds travel to Kumana National Park from northern areas. Coming to this destination enables travellers to spot different species of migrating birds who nest at the site for numerous months.
